The most common causes of dandruff

Causes of dandruffA lot of people have had the unpleasant experience of having dandruff. And thus, a lot of people are fully aware of what dandruff is. But, for those of you that don’t know – dandruff are the dead white skin cells that fall off from your hair and on your shoulders.

Dandruff can look really bad, especially if you wear black clothes – the white color of dandruff will create a stark contrast and other people will be able to notice it. Dandruff is, in fact, a relatively harmless condition, but sometimes it can be a symptom of a more serious underlying condition.

So, either way, it’s best for you to deal with this problem. But first, you will have to know the most common causes of dandruff.

The causes:

Oily skin

The first most frequent cause of dandruff is having an irritated, oily skin. This condition goes by the medical name of seborrheic dermatitis. The way to diagnose this condition on your own is to see whether the skin on your head is red and oily. If it is, then you have what’s known as the most frequent cause of dandruff. In fact, the scalp is not the only place that can be affected by this condition – other areas of your body may get affected as well. Those are the areas that are rich in oil glands, such as your eyebrows or your armpits. You can even get it at the back of your ears, and even in your groin area.

Lack of shampooing

The second most frequent cause of dandruff is purely hygienic – not shampooing your hair often enough. If you don’t wash your hair regularly, then dead skin cells may multiply in number, and your scalp may get clogged by remnant oils. This is, as you can imagine, a powerful cause of dandruff. But the good thing about it is that you can solve this problem immediately. All you will need is a shampoo, and some water to wash your hair with. And voila, you got rid of your dandruff source. It’s surprising to see just how many people are affected with dandruff because of this reason – and they will try all sorts of other remedies, they’ll even take pills, but they will neglect to perform the basic hygienic operations on their hair.

Malassezia is yet another frequent cause of dandruff. It’s a yeast-like fungus. The fact of the matter is that most people have this yeast-like fungus on their scalps, but the good thing about it is that in most cases it doesn’t really cause any problems. But some people are predisposed not to take too kindly to Malassezia, and this fungus may cause problems for them. Problems in the form of – you guessed it – dandruff. The Malassezia may irritate the scalp of some people, and in the process excess, dead skin cells are created. There are ways to treat this, and the best way to go about it is to go to a medical expert dealing with the health of the scalp.

Dry skin

If you have dry skin, then you are predisposed to having dandruff. The flakes that show in the form of dandruff, originating from dry skin, are generally somewhat smaller than their counterparts from other causes. They are also less oily. And there’s a smaller chance that the skin on your scalp is red and irritated. But this is still a legitimate cause of dandruff that should be taken into consideration. A way to diagnose this condition on your own is by scanning the skin on your entire body. If you have dry skin on your head, then chances are that you will also have some dry skin on some other parts of your body. You can solve this problem by using special shampoos that will hydrate the skin on your scalp.

You can even be sensitive to certain ingredients that are common in scalp hygiene products. Some people think that they aren’t washing their hair enough, so they overdo the shampooing, not realizing that sometimes frequent shampooing can irritate the skin on your scalp and cause dandruff. This is called contact dermatitis. So, it’s best for you to become your own lab-rat, and see how your scalp responds and reacts to different washing products. Again – there are certain specially made shampoos that are designed so as to be less irritating to your scalp than their counterparts. Of course, this may increase their price somewhat, but in the end, it will be worth it.

Final words

So, while it’s true that many people are dealing with problems with dandruff, it’s also true that it’s a condition that can be dealt with. Now that you have the information on the most common causes of dandruff, you’re armed with the knowledge to battle it effectively and make your scalp and hair healthier than ever before.
